Post Natal Depression (PND)


After giving birth it is not uncommon to experience a brief period of feeling emotional and tearful . This is sometimes called the baby blues, usually 3-14 days after giving birth. It is said to affects about 80 % of new mothers. It is considered quite normal.  (Fathers can also feel it.)  It doesn't usually last for more than a few days.  10-15 per cent of new mothers develop a deeper and longer-term depression known as postnatal depression (PND). It usually develops within six weeks of giving birth and can come on suddenly or gradually. PND can range from being relatively mild to severe.
